Cold cathode

Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp

A cold cathode is an element used within some Nixie tubes, gas discharge lamps, gas filled tubes, and vacuum tubes. The term 'cold cathode' refers to the fact that the cathode is not independently heated. In spite of this, the cathode itself may still operate at temperatures as high as if the cathode were heated.

Cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) are usually also called cold cathodes. Neon lamps are a very common example of a cold cathode lamp.

Cold Cathodes remain popular for LCD backlighting and enthusiast computer case modders.

How to Change Out a Fluorescent Light Box

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Screwdrivers
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Drill and bit
  • Tape measure
  • Wire nuts
  • Toggle bolts
  • Circuit tester
  • Ladder
  • Spackle compound
  • Sandpaper
Step1
Turn off the power to the light box. This should be done not only in the room the light is in, but also at the source of power, be it a fuse box or a circuit breaker.
Step2
Take off the plastic diffuser panel and then the metal grid supports for the panel.
Step3
Remove the fluorescent bulbs. At this point use a circuit tester to verify that the power to the light fixture is off.
Step4
Unscrew the fixture from the ceiling. Separate the wires of the fixture by untwisting them.
Step5
Spackle any holes left in the ceiling by the screws. Sand the ceiling when dry.
Step6
Hold the new fixture in the desired place on the ceiling. Measure from the fixture to the wall to make sure it is straight. Mark with a pencil the places where the screws will mount into the ceiling. Take the new fixture back down and drill the new mounting holes.
Step7
Place toggle bolts into the mounting hole unless the holes are in a wooden support beam. If that is the case, use wood screws. Screw in the toggle bolts securely.
Step8
Connect the fixture wires with the ceiling wires, being sure to connect like color with like color. Use wire nuts to cover the wires. Now attach the ground wire to the fixture base.
Step9
Install new light bulbs. Put the new fixture cover in place.
Step10
Turn the power back on at the source.
